From the 28th day of pregnancy, an echo can give a very clear picture of the amniotic sac in the womb, and in it you can clearly recognise a puppy. Because an echo takes place in “real-time”, it is a moving picture, so that the movements of the puppies can be clearly seen, such as, for example, the heart beat or the pulsing of the arteries in the umbilical chord.
The vet can tell you a lot about it during the echo (which, of course, you may attend). At particular images, there is the possibility of freezing the picture and carefully looking at the picture or even writing it to disk so that you can look at it later on your computer at home. There is also the possibility, for a small additional charge, to have the complete echo recording transferred to video tape, a so-called fun echo. This can then be taken home to show to the family, to neighbours and acquaintances. There is a comprehensive package which allows you to have another echo taken half-way through the pregnancy, a real fun echo. Now there is even more you can see; the pups are much larger and their legs, head, stomach etc. can all be clearly seen. It is something worth having! You could also give a copy of it to the pup’s new owners.
Here is an example of an early stage in the pregnancy (c. 30 days) with two amniotic sacs on the echo. You can also see a graph with which the vet can measure how large the puppies are and, related to this, how long the pregnancy has lasted, if the date of mating is not known.
