Breeding Lhasa Apsos can be an enjoyable and exciting activity.
But it also requires a lot of knowledge, a lot of work, and it costs quite a lot of money.
Few people realise everything involved in mating a bitch and breeding a litter, and for this reason you will find a menu at the bottom of the page which may help you find an answer to any question you may have.
All the breeders affiliated to this site are always ready to assist you with answers to any other questions you may have.
When you breed a Lhasa Apso with a pedigree - because that is what we are discussing here - it requires far more preparation that you may expect. You have to think about quite a few things: For owners who are members of the Dutch Breed Club “De Pekingees en Dwergspaniel Club”, the following rules apply:
* The bitch must be at least 16 months old and no more than 60 months old when she is mated for the the first time.
* Both the bitch and the stud dog must have been tested by a vet for PRA and Cataract; you can find further information about this eye test in the health section of this site.
* Both dogs must have been entered and shown at CAC/CACIB show at least twice; results in the Baby or Puppy Class to not count for this.
* If, through circumstances, you cannot show the bitch (e.g. because the coat is not in show condition), she must be “judge and approved” at the annual Club Show held by the Breed Club.
* Both dogs must, of course, have an official pedigree.
* You may not breed with a bitch who is older than 8 years.
* The bitch may not have more than 2 litters in any period of 24 months, and at least 10 months must have expired between the mating for the first litter and the mating for the next one.
It goes without saying that both bitch and dog must be healthy; in addition, a bitch may not have more than 5 litters in her life.
If you are not a member of the Breed Club, you must adhere to the rules of the Raad van Beheer, the Dutch Kennel Club. You will find this rules at http://www.raadvanbeheer.nl/
If you wish to have your bitch mated to a dog belonging to a breeder or owner who is a member of the Breed Club, you must have the eyes of your bitch tested by a qualified vet.
